Cod liver oil

As far back as the 18th century, cod liver oil was said to 'cure every lameness' and arthritis sufferers still prize this fish oil for the relief of stiffness and pain.

Twentieth century science has isolated cod liver oil as a valuable source of fat-soluble vitamins A and D, and of a special group of rare polyunsaturated fats found only in oily fish -omega-3 polyunsaturates. Cod liver oil has an impressive medical pedigree, with much scientific and anecdotal evidence attesting its value. Omega-3 polyunsaturates have been shown to make myocytes - the heart cells that generate electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat - less prone to developing abnormal rhythms when an adverse condition such as a heart attack occurs.

Several studies have demonstrated that Omega-3 supplements can significantly reduce the mortality rate of people who have suffered heart attacks - one of the world's biggest killers. But the power of cod liver oil doesn't stop there; it also helps the brain.

Brain cells have a high proportion of fatty membrane, which acts as insulation while they transmit and receive electrical impulses. Adding Omega-3 to the diet can alter the way the brain functions, reducing the symptoms of severe manic-depression, and reducing aggression under stress. A lack of Omega-3 has also been implicated in post-natal depression and hyperactivity in children. For heart, circulation and brain health, a daily dose of 400mg of Omega-3 is recommended.
