Sweet water from the sea

In 120 countries exists 13 thousand stations, which transform the salty water into sweet water. This transformation is being done by 2 methods: distillation and pressure.
There are many factories of sweet water in different countries. Even in London is predicted to build stations for sweet water. But these stations are not safety. How does it effect on water systems, is unknown.
