The Lighthouse of Alexandria

 

Known as the Pharos of Alexandria was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse was completed in the 3rd century BC. The building is square, about 8.5 metres (28 ft) each side.

 

Being at a crossroads, it was familiar to all seafarers as the largest and most beautiful beacon, the ships could pass safely reeves on a way to the Alexandria bay. At night it helped by reflexion of flame, and in the afternoon — by a smoke column. Its height was about 120 metres. It was the first-ever beacon, and it almost has  been staning alone one thousand years. The Alexandria beacon has been destroyed during earthquake in 1326. In the end of XV century the sultan Quitbay has erected on a place of a beacon a fortress which costs till now.
